Especially when, let’s face it, their hands are wet and the weather is so bad. There’s absolutely no doubt that using a walkie-talkie app works extremely well in tough situations, and especially amongst volunteers who are quite simply too busy helping people to try typing on a smart phone. Now, with Hurricane Irma bearing down on Florida, interest in Zello is being boosted yet again. However, the huge interest in Zello saw the company admitting it has had to add servers to keep it up. “With the crush of new users and emergency situations, most of the Zello team is working long days either maintaining capacity or helping with customer support,” he said.
#WHAT IS ZELLO FREE#
Zello appears to have added six million new registered users since Monday, the company’s CEO, Bill Moore, told BuzzFeed News, and is now the top free app on the iOS App Store.

After being featured in a Houston Chronicle story about the “Cajun Navy” of volunteers who have been using the app to coordinate their efforts in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, the app hit the top of the US app store. The main one that’s being talked about - and downloaded at a prodigious rate - is Zello, a walkie-talkie app which was originally launched in Russia in 2007 under the name LoudTalks (but since moved to Austin, Texas in 2011) and now boasts 100 million users around the world. As a result, smartphone apps which can help coordinate rescues and responses have become crucial to efforts. I just can’t see a reason to even try. With Hurricane Irma hitting Florida’s southern islands as a category four storm, and more than 6.3 million being told to evacuate Florida, being able to stay in contact with the outside world is a high priority. There seem to be a number of positive reviews, so it must work for certain people in certain situations. Having just written this, I may fire-up an IRC app, where I can at least peruse public channels, from which one-to-one communications can be established. Obviously I seem to have more questions pertaining to why one would choose to use this app, when there are already various alternatives available. If I were in the field, or within a premises, why would I use this rather than basic 2-way radios/walkie-talkies (assuming I don’t just call)?

If not, then that would be another question to put in the ‘why use it’ column. Perhaps if there were global or local ‘channels’ to listen to, and possibly participate in, I could see it as an improvement over the old ways of IRC, but they don’t exist.Īssuming the app gets used, are calls encrypted end-to-end? Why use an app as an old fashioned two-way radio when one can always call directly, either via normal mobile phone calls, or other internet based calling systems? I fail to see how this can be any better than using any other form of voice over IP methods or apps. Haven’t had the chance to try this app, hence the low score, combined with the following: #1 choice of companies like Hilton, Honda, and YRC Freight.Use with countless compatible devices and push-to-talk accessories - even radios.Send photos, text, or location to coworkers or friends instantly.Organize communication in channels of up 6000 users.Talk with free live voice over any carrier or Wi-Fi connection in crystal clear quality.Millions more use Zello instead of texting or calling: for private chats with a friend, for a live group call with your family, to coordinate routes on a hiking adventure, or to set up a soccer practice. Zello has even replaced 2-way radios at these jobs, eliminating cross-talk, extending communication range, and taking advantage of already deployed smartphones and tablets. Zello turns your phone into a walkie talkie that works anywhere in the world as long as you are connected to the internet!ĭrivers, taxi and delivery dispatchers, construction workers, enterprise fleet managers, retail associates and hotel staff love using Zello to locate their team members, communicate critical information, and get work done. Frontline workers, teams, and communities stay connected, safe, and productive. Zello is the #1 digital two way radio app with over 150 million users in over 200 countries.
